Now that I’ve gone over the basics of machine sewing, it’s time to start our first “functional” project – the messenger bag!
I chose the messenger bag because it is the most versatile version of a bag. The bag we’ll be making can be as masculine or as feminine as you want. Besides, the size we’ll be making is plenty big enough to be used for many different things. Most laptops will fit inside it, or you can store your future sewing projects in it. I use mine to carry books when I go to the library.
Concepts covered in this project:
- Clipping corners and curves
- Top stitching
The steps for the messenger bag will be as follows:
- Materials List
- Choosing the right fabric
- Drafting the pattern
- Cutting out the fabric
- Sewing the strap
- Sewing the body
- Sewing the Flap
- Adding the strap
- Attaching the flap
- Joining interior and exterior
- Finishing up
