This is part 6 in a series designed to walk you through designing and sewing a messenger bag. If you have missed steps, you should go back to this page.

You assemble the exterior of the messenger bag exactly as the lining. Make sure to repeat these instructions to assemble the lining as well.

Lay out one of the body pieces of the bag with both sides laid on top of it, right sides together. Pin and sew them together.

When the bottom is properly attached, it will overlap the side slightly. Make sure that you only sew the bottom to the body without sewing it to the side. This will allow it to attach together later.

2014-09-10 16.01.32You will now have all the sides sewn to one side of the body. If you lay it out, it will look like this:

2014-09-10 16.08.19Once all the pieces are sewn together, they’ll form something that looks like a strange cross.

2014-09-10 16.13.13Pin and sew the base of one of the sides to the corresponding side of the bottom piece. Make sure to fold the excess fabric out of the way before sewing.

2014-09-10 16.14.06Pin and sew the other side to the bottom piece.

2014-09-10 16.16.42Fold the side over and pin the matching edges together. Sew them together, being careful to not sew it to any extra layers. Repeat this on the other side.

2014-09-10 16.20.23Clip the corners where the pieces come together.

Once you have done this for both the exterior and lining, the pieces that make up the body of your bag are now complete.
